Climate Listening Project partner Laura Lengnick brought us on tour to Maple Spring Gardens to film Ken Dawson, a farmer featured in her book Resilient Agriculture.
All of our fields were once worn out, run down, eroded tobacco land. Through the use of organic soil building practices such as composting and cover cropping we have transformed abused and neglected land into a fertile and productive farm. Improving and maintaining the health of our soil will be a lifelong endeavor.
Maple Spring Gardens raises about 80 different varieties of vegetables, as well as cut flowers, small fruits and culinary and medicinal herbs for sale to local markets. We walked the fields, tasted warm strawberries fresh off the vine, and listened as Ken described his commitment to organic farming and the lengthy certification process. Most importantly the importance of preparing for a sustainable future for his children and generations to come.
